Digital Preservation is happy to report on updates to the Digital Preservation Framework for this past quarter (July to September 2025). The Framework is available through GitHub, and the updated File Format Preservation Action Plans are also available as Linked Open Data.
No new formats were added this quarter. Instead, we’ve focused our efforts on continuous improvement: reviewing and updating the Description and Justification statements in the File Format Preservation Action Plans. This quarter we’ve refined 105 descriptions!

As with last quarter, these updates to format descriptions have helped us improve other data as well, adjusting some format names for consistency and clarifying NARA’s preservation plans. The format description work has also led to deprecating some format entries in the Framework, and this quarter we removed five formats (stay tuned for a future blog post that will explain more about what leads us to deprecate format entries). The change log in GitHub lists these and other updates.
